Seeing God Face to Face: Augustine’s Vision of the Spiritual Body in De civitate Dei 22, 29
Abstract
In De civitate Dei (civ. Dei), the final destination of the people in the city of God is the true happy life (beata vita). It is where Christians will see God directly in his resurrected perfect body. Specifically, Augustine argues in civ. Dei 22, 29 that part of the salvific hope for Christians is that they will see God’s face – which he understands as the manifestation of God (dei manifestatio) – in the spiritual body that they will receive in the next life. In this paper, I will explore how Augustine explains the spiritual body ‘seeing God face to face’ by interpreting the Pauline phrase «face to face (facie ad faciem)» in 1 Cor. 13:12 from three perspectives, namely the content, the context and the container of this vision of God (visio Dei) for his people.
