The Medium as a Saint? The Magri Case and the Holy Office’s 1917 Decree on Spiritualism

L’articolo esamina il caso del sacerdote Emanuele Magri, coinvolto tra il 1916 e il 1917 in una serie di sedute spiritiche con il giovane medium Ermanno Beato a Firenze. Basato su documenti inediti conservati presso l’Archivio del Dicastero per la Dottrina della Fede, lo studio analizza il quaderno in cui Magri registrò le comunicazioni ricevute durante le trance e ne propose una reinterpretazione teologica in chiave cristiana. Ricostruendo la successiva valutazione del Sant’Uffizio, l’articolo mostra come il caso contribuì alla formulazione del decreto del 1917 contro lo spiritismo e illumina le tensioni tra sperimentazione religiosa, movimenti esoterici e autorità ecclesiastica nella cultura cattolica del primo Novecento.

This article examines the case of the priest Emanuele Magri, who between 1916 and 1917 participated in a series of spiritistic séances involving the young medium Ermanno Beato in Florence. Drawing on previously unstudied documents from the Archive of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, the study analyzes the notebook in which Magri recorded the communications received during trance states and attempted to reinterpret them within a Christian theological framework. By reconstructing the subsequent evaluation of the Holy Office, the article shows how this episode contributed to the formulation of the 1917 decree against spiritualism and sheds light on the tensions between religious experimentation, esoteric movements, and ecclesiastical authority in early twentieth-century Catholic culture.
